Domain Validation (DV)
DV certificates verify only that you control the domain. The Certificate Authority (CA) checks domain ownership through email, DNS record, or HTTP file validation. No company information is verified or displayed.
Issuance: Automated, typically within minutes. This is the fastest type of SSL certificate to obtain.
Best for: Personal websites, blogs, landing pages, development servers, and any site that needs encryption without needing to display company credentials.
Organization Validation (OV)
OV certificates verify domain ownership plus your organization's legal identity. The CA checks company registration documents and may contact your organization to confirm the request. Your company name appears in the certificate details.
Issuance: 1–3 business days. The CA needs time to verify your organization's information.
Best for: Business websites, e-commerce stores, corporate portals, and any organization that wants to prove its identity to visitors.
Extended Validation (EV)
EV certificates undergo the most rigorous verification process. The CA verifies domain ownership, organization identity, legal existence, operational status, and physical address. Your company name is prominently displayed in the certificate details.
Issuance: 1–5 business days. The thorough verification process takes longer but provides the highest level of assurance.
Best for: Banks, financial institutions, large enterprises, government websites, and any site where maximum trust is essential.
When to Choose Which?
- Choose DV if you need fast, affordable encryption for a personal project or blog and don't need to display company information.
- Choose OV if you run a business and want customers to see your verified company name in the certificate, adding a layer of trust.
- Choose EV if you handle sensitive transactions (payments, banking, healthcare) and need the absolute highest level of trust and verification.
